As I have a bit of spare time this holiday break, I thought I’d play an MMORPG. The one I settled on was DC Universe Online, where you play as a new superhero being trained by a classic DC character.
As you can see, while creating your character you have three different body types for each gender. You can have a small, speedy character; a medium-sized, classic character; or a taller, larger character. I find it interesting that the muscles on the three male body types are smaller, more average, or larger depending on which height you choose. Meanwhile, the female body types… Well, the smallest one has a thinner waist, the average one has slightly larger hips, and the largest one has more gravity-defying breasts. The body type itself doesn’t affect how your character plays, of course. Compared to most video games, I should be grateful for the customization that’s there! It’s still kind of bothersome that, size notwithstanding, the difference between the three female models is near impossible to see without switching back and forth between them.

This reminds me of playing City of Heroes, and being frustrated that I couldn’t make a female hulking monster character, a big beef larger shouldered & armed warrior woman, a small girl hero with no breasts, or a woman in a suit that would look like Iron Man.  Even the robot suits were clingy and that wasn’t what I was going for.  Meanwhile, I saw giant hulking male heroes, and male characters that looked thin and slight like boys.
The chest slider for men allowed for larger upper bodies that look built, while for women it just makes the breasts stick out more or less, and I could never make a bulky heroine, she just ends up looking kinda curvy.
The men had a lot more variety on what you could do with their bodies than the DC online creator though, even tho there’s still definitely a discrepancy between the men and women.
Sadly this is just being true to the source material since comics mostly abide by this too, and we have “how to draw” books that teach artists that male characters can come in a variety of shapes (though, apparently fat characters should be evil) while female characters come in a variety of the same shape.

MMOs will get better if people keep talking about it.
As it’s not a direct intentional thing, so much as someone deciding that the demand for multiple female bodytypes isn’t high enough.
It needs to be gotten through that it IS worth the effort to do so, even if a very small minority of players do the hulking female, that the option exists.

I also remember hearing at one point the reason for the lack of the options on females is to protect the game against backlash for allowing “offensive” characters like little girls in sexy outfits.

“Amazing creature” is right.  (And if we extrapolate where her knee is off the page, her thighs might be the length of her upper body.)
Also… that is not water… it was either raining milk outside, or she got into a fight with Spider-Man, or…

The fuck s with the dude in the background? He looks like he comes from an utterly different comic. And how realistic he is drawn compared to that strange T-rex looking lady. Her arms are actually too short to reach her waist, let alone her feet. She can’t tie her own shoes, or put anything in a pocket. Her life must be hard.

This is from Birds of Prey #0 drawn by Romano Molenaar.
As much as my brain wants that leg to belong to a 2nd, otherwise obscured person, it doesn’t. Black Canary’s spine just has a 90 degree bend in it.

The Shoe Snake Parasites are indeed a plague in the DCnU.

She was trained to do that on Team 7?

Escher Girls is a force for good
The latest page of The Young Protectors included this panel of the Commander.  Creator Alex Woolfson said this about it:

Coupled with her expression, I find it really heroic. And yet, thanks to y’all turning me on to the Escher Girls blog, I’m now also noticing that we get a very good view of her butt as well. Hmm. Now, perhaps because I’m a gay guy, that part of her anatomy didn’t catch my eye at all. When I saw the completed art, my mind was all like: that fierce expression! That shoulder! Those fists! (And I’m certain it also wasn’t Adam’s goal to sexualize this pose either.) But as I publish this comic, there are many ways that I learn from all of you and based on the intelligent discussion in the comments about the history of these kinds of poses, the posing of our female characters is something I will pay a lot more attention to. If a female character is deliberately trying to strike a provocative pose (as a future character will do), that’s one thing. But is that Commander’s vibe? Not so much. The art for this scene is already complete, but this is something I’m going to pay a lot more attention to when she is onscreen in future scenes and I thank you all again for being such a great, smart community of readers who continue to be great teachers as well.

Thanks for sharing this!  This is a really great response and I tip my cap (if I wear caps, which I don’t, but I do wear cat ears hats, so I tip that), to Mr. Woofson for listening to reader feedback. :)  I think she does look quite strong, but I think she would look even stronger if her entire body was turned like the men.  I think, sometimes, a lot of this is subconscious also, because we see these poses so often in comics.  When women face a threat, they’re almost always turning towards it while their butt faces away, as if they’re surprised from behind.  I think a lot of artists just do it because that’s just the pose we see women in when they’re fighting, facing a threat, talking, or anything else in comics, and it just looks “right”.  It doesn’t mean he necessarily did it because of that, but I think that’s often why it happens.
Either way, kudos to him! :)

It’s great to see that EG is causing creators to really think about how women are visually portrayed.

Super Hero Bodies

This CA article on Bodies of Heroes by Andrew Wheeler is a must read.

For a lot of comic artists these photos were eye-opening. Body diversity is a rarity in comics. There are exceptions - guys like Wolverine, Colossus, Nightcrawler and Beast stand out because uniqueness is part of the X-Men’s core concept - but most members of the Justice League or the Avengers would be hard to tell apart in silhouette without their costumes. That’s not necessarily an accident. Even when character design is meant to be distinctive, an artist’s style will often take precedence. Uniformity can be an artist’s hallmark.

But it would be generous to assume that uniformity is always a stylistic choice. Over-reliance onthe same basic models seems to be a crutch for a lot of superhero artists.

I asked four comic artists who don’t have this problem to help me with a simple exercise. Kalman Andrasofszky, cover artist for X-Treme X-Men; Ramón Pérez, recent Eisner winner for Tale of Sand; Jamie McKelvie, artist on Defenders; and Marcus To, artist on Batwing, all have a track record of making their characters look distinctive. I gave them a list of eight superheroes and asked them to rank them by size and match them to athletic body types to see if there was a consensus about what these superheroes should look like.

So much of what is in this article reinforces my thoughts on how things should be in comics, and it highlights potential issues such as the fact that female characters bodies are nowhere near as well defined as male characters.  I haven’t seen the article show up on my tumblr dash, so here it goes.

So the art in this series has been fairly “meh” overall (with the occasional good bit here and there. Tony’s armor for example), but for all I’ve seen the broken-body-ness all over this tumblr, this honestly surprised me in how awful it was.I mean OW. Look at her poor feet! Her right foot looks like it’s about to wrench itself right off her leg and the left seems to be attempting to stand perfectly flat-footed in mid-air. Her ankles are either amazingly bendy or broken. I lean to the latter.Oh, and Boobs and Butts and whatevs.

If they attached knives to all her limbs (and possibly to her head), she could be nigh invincible.

I actually like this. It’s a crazy impossible desperate move to try.

Look at her waist, it is drawn to show that bodies don’t really work that way. This looks fully intentional.
And if you look at Cap, non-shocked. Other dude is.

It’s pretty difficult to get through a page of Mighty Avengers when every female character is in exactly the same pose. In addition to these two, there are girls in the same pose the page before and a few pages after.

At least Stature is getting a drink, what’s Jocasta’s excuse?  Also, I love the one guy we SHOULD see the butt of has it completely obscured by shadow, and the other guys conveniently aren’t showing any butt, but both women have their butts prominently on display.

Isn’t Stature also like 16 years old?

I also am weirded out by Herc. His proportions just seem really off, like he has no thighs.

Yeah, the men have seemed to have misplaced several inches in their legs, possibly in order to add girth to their shoulders.
It’s really sad to see art so lazy and blatantly stereotypical. It looks like satire!

I don’t even think it’s laziness.

Most artists have tough deadlines. Deadlines that don’t really leave room for errors. Things have gotten better in the last year or so at Marvel, as they are now working further ahead and rotating artists on arcs.

But I can imagine this panel/page was a case of “fuck, this is off, there is no good way to fix things without either being late or taking time away from another page”

It’s also an establishing shot, so it’s.. not exactly important other than knowing who is in the scene.

Who drew it by the way? As it looks sort of like Yu’s style, but off.

I was reading the No Man’s Land vol. 2 trade paperback today and noticed this.  I know it’s Balent, but even for his style this is really off.  And I think she’s missing a leg… and organs.

I don’t think she has a ribcage.

It’s something about where her neck and head are located. Each part of Catwoman seems okay, but together, combined with that torso, it’s just so much worse.
And that is why the foreground dude is flipping out, she is some sort of monster.

Needs cigs to be an orgy aftermath.
Everything looks so disconnected from the other elements. No one actually looks like they are laying on the ground they are on, but on pillows/beds that are invisble.
Oh, Greg Land did this.
Makes sense now.
