I think Superman Unchained is a pretty good 3rd Superman book. I’m not sure what really makes it different from all the others (Batman is Super-hero, Detective is more crime, Batman and Robin is more Robin, Batman Inc. is the end of a 6 year long story)
but I don’t like what Jim Lee did on a few pages.
Namely the focus and the way some pages are laid out, it’s hard to tell what is going on, like how exactly did Superman stop the satellite? One moment it was falling, and the next it was crashed and everyone was okay?
Then there is this page, with Lois.
Editing the newspaper using holograms.
Because Jim wanted to show tech, but show Lois head on. In a skintight short dress that is FUCKING UGLY.
This page also has some weak-ass newspaper writing “bumping the ads here” and again EDITING THE PAPERS BY STANDING IN FRONT OF A HOLOGRAM AND SLIDING THEM AROUND BECAUSE LOIS CAN’T SAY WHAT NEEDS TO BE SAID CONCISELY.
Ahd she is holding the cup of coffee while using her Kinect/Hologram editing station that doesn’t actually have ht layout of the page.
Because Jim wanted a shot of her head on, looking sexy.
I’m hoping #2 is stronger and that the two of them work better together as a team. And maybe something to justify having this be a book instead of just being Action Comics #22, or Superman #22.
Just a reminder, DC’s target audience thought this comic was AWESOME, and not in a “let’s laugh at how fucking terrible the writing is and over overly dramatic and posed the art is” sort of way.

But it wasn’t until last night that I did a search for them online… see, I wanted to show some friends what they looked like… but goddamn it I couldn’t find a single result for them! So I decided to take my own pics. Have you ever seen these posters before?

To get more people reading comics, get Rob Liefield?
Deathstroke, Hawkman, Grifter.
Jesus.
Now I don’t hate Rob, I just don’t like his comics or his art style.
But wasn’t the new 52 to be about new ideas, new fans and breathing new life into comics?
Logic therefore is to hire the guy that was the poster child for the early 90s comics.
I’m also wondering about the back-scratching and boys-club nature of DC, as turning 3 comics over to one of the good friends of the EIC seems a bit.. odd.
I haven’t liked either of the 3 comics in question, and my cynical and mean mind finds Rob to be a perfect fit for Deathstroke and Grifter. Dudes with pouches, guns and swords go around killing shit being all “bad ass”.
Of course, there are different ways to run with those comics, it’s true, ways that would probably have been more interesting to me, a guy that sort of hates 85% of the old DCU.
But hey, go for the early 90s money. It will fail again. Maybe the problem is that so many of the people in charge at DC think the past was amazing. We got Jim and Rob who are in love with their early 90s shit, with pouches and lines on everything, and Johns who hates the last 30 years of comic books and wants us all to worship Barry Allen as Flash and Hal Jordan Green Lantern as a sort of double Jesus and even made them BFFs in Justice League.
Fuck it. I don’t want to read comics that feel out of touch, I want new comics that looking forward.
From DC I’m reading Action Comics, Animal Man, Batman, Batwoman, Batgirl, Frankenstein, The Flash, Swamp Thing, and Wonder Woman. Yeah, that is a good pile of comics, but they are only ones that really feel new.
I would put Stormwatch on here, but it feels like the Glee cover of Warren Ellis’s Authority. Maybe if I hear that it’s found it’s own tone, I will give a fuck.
The books I listed are good, why? because they have their own voices and seem like they are new, even Action and Batman, starring the two oldest heroes. They are the type of DCNU I want, tip a hat to history, but be about defining a new future.
I also left off Blackhawks because it’s so boring and kind of dumb, no matter how many times they say nanobots, it just doesn’t feel like any of the cyborgs are Transhuman or that out there.
