So, if human technology is exponentially “progressing” (Godwin’s Law, etc.), does that mean that humanity is progressing? I mean, we still fight wars. I thought that whole modernity thing was debunked (or maybe it was the theory kids popular in the ’80s).

Maybe not on a set path. But maybe we are. We have become more accepting of others compared to past generations. But there is still the idea that maybe technology will hold all solutions. And maybe if we ever get to zero point energy and make entropy our collective bitch, there will be no reason not to have a utopia.

Rand Paul blasts Congress for attacking Apple over taxes — RT USA »

stfuconservatives:

rtamerica:

Sen. Rand Paul is outraged that Congress held a hearing to “bully one of America’s greatest success stories.” The Kentucky lawmaker believes Apple was unfairly targeted for trying to minimize its taxes, and that the company is owed an apology.

Ah, yes, a true American success story. Kids, work hard and study in school and maybe one day you too could be exporting jobs from America to countries with questionable labor practices and then pocketing the tax money with loopholes created exclusively for the benefit of the wealthy! AMERICA!

I just don’t buy this bullshit where companies and individuals try to look like saints by throwing their hands up in the air and saying, “Well, it’s not OUR fault we skipped out on paying taxes, we fully complied with the tax law! Who would want to pay more than they owe???” I believe Romney said something along those lines during the election. The people who create the tax laws are overwhelmingly wealthy individuals. Many tax exemptions can ONLY be taken advantage of if you’re wealthy (to wit: Romney’s $77,000+ tax refund for his wife’s horse). Corporations employ massive teams of accountants for the sole purpose of finding new ways to get out of paying taxes.

Then again, Congress doesn’t really have the moral high ground in this situation. They’re complaining that Apple took advantage of a tax code that they made, and that they can change if they want to. But they don’t want to. Because Apple and many of the other companies that enjoy corporate welfare subsidies are also major donors to political campaigns. It’s almost like money is toxic in politics or something.

Rand Paul hates the idea of taxes. As everyone knows that this isn’t about apple, it’s about showing a concrete example of how the tax system is fucked.
And the fact that Ireland has nearly nonexistent corporate taxes, they are the Delaware of the EU

Click through for a good read from Darryl Ayo. I asked him what the last comic was that had storytelling that knocked his socks off, and he comes with two examples. It’s well worth reading!

One thing about this Daredevil page, though, drawn by Chris Samnee, scripted by Mark Waid, colors by Javier Rodriguez. This is a total pet peeve and I started this sentence apologizing (“maybe it’s unfair”) but no, it is not unfair: Those aren’t kusarigama. These are just kama. Kusarigama is a chain + sickle + a weight, while kama are just sickles. Kusarigama are actually an interesting weapon for a Daredevil villain (?) to use, since they’re a kind of a more lethal take on his extendo billy club. (The ways DD traditionally uses the club kill me. He’s a budget Spider-Man with ninja skills. He could do so much more.)

It’s weird that kusarigama would be shouted out in the text but wrong in the art. It’s specific enough that I think the creative team was going for a certain mood or effect. Kusarigama aren’t as popular as all the other weapons in TMNT, but if you know the word, you know what they look like, you know? And seeing them described incorrectly snatches you out of the story. It’s like the flip side of verisimilitude, where you’d usually hint at something to make your story feel real, but if you hint at something in the wrong way or get some detail wrong, it turns it into anti-versimilitude-ium, the least popular element. Be careful out there!

Kusarigama were used to marvelous effect in an arc or two of Takehiko Inoue’s Vagabond. I’m trying to think of a movie that used them… they’re in Ninja Gaiden 2, but that’s a video game. I keep thinking of Chinese flicks with meteor hammers (that thing Gogo Yubari rocked in Kill Bill). Anyway, they’re beautiful in motion. You can find some people running through forms on youtube.

Didn’t they use them in ninja assassin?
